Pinkerton and his wife had settled in Chicago, where shortly after he discovered that he was very good at catching criminals, leading him to form the National Pinkerton Detective Agency in 1850. He employed detectives, referred to as “private eyes,” who then became well known due to the organizations reliability. His services were used by several famous historical figures of that time, such as Abraham Lincoln and General McClellan. Scotland ran a successful company and due to the fact that he caught all but one criminal he was assigned to capture. He later died in 1884 and his sons, William and Robert Pinkerton, took over the agency. Many of the techniques that were created by these organizations, such as the use of fingerprints and connecting it to the culprit, anthropometry, psychology, study of blood splatter stains, the use of plain clothed detectives, etc. are still used today and has undergone improvements. These organizations have created the foundation for our criminal justice system and has helped improve the system that we now currently have in place. In addition, they have provided good reads for crime drama lovers. Since many of these organizations are still around, one can conclude that the founders were very much great
