Euthanasia Should be Legal

Euthanasia is the intentional causing of a painless death. Euthanasia should be legal in every state. It is already legal in some areas and if put to a vote in every state, it most likely would become legal. Every state resident should be given the opportunity to vote on the issue. It should also the right of a competent patient to decide his own life, or death. If it is within an individual's rights to commit suicide it should be legal to ask for help if needed.

Euthanasia is a serious issue and it will not disappear if ignored. The residents of every state have the right and privilege to vote on laws that effect them. Why is the law concerning euthanasia any different? The opponents to

The ease and frequency in which euthanasia occurs illustrates a need for some kind of action. I propose a vote to let the public decide on the issue.

Opponents will say that it is not right to allow a person to ask for his own death because he may not be mentally competent. The person may be in so much pain that he has not really thought the idea through well enough to make this decision. Others have suggested that the patient maybe pressured into suicide or feel guilty that he may become a burden. The proposal against euthanasia is to give painkillers and whatever medication is needed to numb the pain. They propose to make the patient comfortable until he dies.

First I propose that several psychiatric tests be run to determine a patient's mental state. I found a proposal given by members of the Vess organization. They wrote the Assisted Suicide Act for the United Kingdom, yet it can apply to the United States also. First a person must request to die and a medical and a legal practitioner must determine that he is mentally competent to make this decision. Second two medical practitioners must decide that the patient is terminal or experiencing extreme mental or physical suffering. The patient can either have a request put in writing or it can be done verbally. Within this proposal they offer immunity to any who assist in the suicide as long as the preceding
