Year Round Schooling Year round schooling is an idea that schools across the United States are discussing. The school calendar consists of the same 180 instructional days, but the instructional days and vacation days would be divided into smaller units. The school year can be divided into forty-five instructional days and fifteen vacation days or sixty instructional days and twenty vacation days. These calendar days are called tracks. “A single track is when the sequence of the instructional and vacation days are switched for the whole school year. A multi-track is when the student body and staff are divided on the number of tracks used (three, four, or five). Year-round schooling was not a proposal when farming was prevalent. Farmers needed their children to help on the farm in order for the family to earn money. Technology has made a rapid uprising in the United States and can be used to enhance natural farming products, to process the products, and to transport products. “Farm and ranch families comprise just two percent of the United States population” (“Social”). In the rural areas, people still farm, and the farmers need their children in the summer to help with production. Studies have been conducted to determine if year round schooling creates an environment where students retain more information. The recent studies, however, showed that the “results were inconclusive. Existing reviews suggest that the student achievement in year round schools would be slightly better than student achievement in traditional schools. A number of recent studies have shown that no matter the scheduling system, the student achievements remained the same” (“Year-Round Schooling”). Coming back from the breaks between instructional days, teachers have to review what the assignment or material the class was studying. A year round schooling schedule would also affect the school maintenance and school building. The school maintenance would “work on nights and weekends (all overtime), and some maintenance would require fifteen to twenty days to be completed” (“Year Round Education”). School buildings can handle the winter conditions; they would need to be able to handle the summer heat. If the school cannot handle the summer heat, the building would need to be remodeled. Remodeling would take time out of the instructional days in a year round
