Some of the B vitamins have been proven to be unable to be absorbed or processed in the human body from plant sources, which means that supplements must be taken in order to provide for these deficiencies (Disadvantages of Going Veg). If these deficiencies are not counteracted in some way there can be serious consequences. For example, Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to early dementia, lack of coordination, forgetfulness, nerve dysfunction, memory loss, disorientation, difficulty with concentration and loss of balance when walking (Vegan Diets: The Pros and Cons). Anemia can be common in vegetarians, especially vegans, because they may not get enough iron and women specifically lose a certain amount of iron monthly due to their menstruation cycle. Calcium and Vitamin D intakes can be lacking in a vegan diet and these people need to ensure proper consumption of green leafy vegetables, calcium-fortified soy milk, cereals and juices. Many of the food sources that are fortified with calcium are also fortified with Vitamin D and Vitamin D is required for calcium metabolism, therefore it is so important to ensure the consumption of these foods. The concerns that arise with veganism are only because there is the ability for vegans to be lacking in so many vital nutrients and vitamins. The major factor that must be taken into account to consider this a healthy way of life is to make sure one is eating properly from all the vegan friendly food groups to ensure there are no deficiencies in protein, vitamin B or D, calcium and iron. As long as the vegan diet includes all of these necessary items than it is a completely healthy diet and way of life, the options for the vegetarian eater have become much more plentiful over the last 10 or so years and therefore makes it much easier to enjoy this type of lifestyle
