Similarities Between Sonny Blues And The Story Of An Hour

James Baldwin’s “Sonny Blues” and Katie Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” are two short stories showing conflict characters feel as though they have been release free from. Baldwin’s character Sonny conflict with his family not understanding his life struggles and was release by the show of him playing jazz music to help them understand. Jazz music was used to help reveal the stories. The character Louise Mallard from “The Story of an Hour” had the conflict of being not her own person and viewed as a possession, but once receiving word of her husband dying in a railroad disaster she considered herself free. The music and heart disease help provide emphasis to the short stories and help the audience understand the characters of Sonny and Louise Mallard. Music symbolizing in “Sonny Blues” creates a better bond among brothers to the point of understanding each other. The music told the story of the Baldwin’s character Sonny in which his brother couldn’t understand until hearing it through music. The heart disease symbolizing in” The Story of an Hour” displays pain of a woman’s marriage and wanting to live her own life. Mrs. Mallard didn’t want the feeling of being a possession to her husband, and the pain was simple release from the news of her husband dying. It was shortly live when finding out the news was false in which the pain return and Mrs. Mallard couldn’t withstand this lifestyle any more causing her death. Symbolism created and resolves conflicts within the stories and best overall help get the idea message of both authors across. Baldwin’s message of understanding brotherly love and the importance of the bond was display by the use of music. Chopin’s message of understanding the pain of suffrage and the feeling of being treated as a possession by characterizing it as a heart disease. The heart disease taking the form of pain being overcome and the body seem to have found peace but can be shortly live so enjoy it while you
