In many colleges, students, fans, and administration are looking forward to a new season of sports. Every year new student athletes are brought in with a hopeful dream to make it to the professional leagues. Appearances on television and being seen by a large audience for games, help promote these athletes for their future careers. Many students are given this incredible opportunity to play a sport while going to school for free and have a career waiting for them. With this controversial topic, why should these college athletes be considered employees? College athletes should not get paid to play because majority of these athletes are receiving scholarships, there are other sports that are not as popular, and lastly the privileges they receive.
Education is important today, many people are unable to get successful jobs without having a college degree. College athletes are given the best opportunity out there. Not only are they guided to following their dreams in playing professional, but they are also given scholarships to help pay for school. Paying a college athlete defeats the overall purpose of attending a university. Being a student athlete is meant to achieve success on the field, but being a student is to continue academic success. Paying a college athletes would not live up to the purpose of furthering one’s knowledge and obtaining a degree to begin life in their career aspirations.
