For the purposes of this assignment I chose to observe and interview Counselor “A” Counseling course 1 “academic skill building course”. Counselor “A” is the director of the Outreach Department at Golden West College and Academic Counselor. She teaches a Counseling course 1 in conjunction with the FYE (First-Year Experience) program, which is a Golden West College program that assists first year college student’s transition easier into college. The Counseling course 1 assists student’s transition into college by providing them a counselor that works closely with them in developing necessary academic skills and each course is paired with a “Success Coach” which serves to further assist students in and out of the classroom via the college’s First Year Experience facility (FYEF). I observed her course on Tuesday November 1st, after class I interviewed Counselor “A” in her office.
Course Topics
The course topics that I observed were developing comprehensive listening skills and note taking. Counselor “A” starts her course by updating students on the current status of the class and begins to hand them a daily quiz.
