Introduction
Humanity is equipped with the capability to progress and grow. For the most part, this advancement is prompted by life experiences, whether positive or negative, that we not only live and dismiss but consider as life lessons from which we learn. In the academic world we live these type of experiences all the time, but seldom we get a chance to reflect intently on that which is reforming and restructuring us and why.
To consider that our Sunday worship service needs renewal was a far-fetched thought for our context, because the word renewal has been used in our denomination to refer to the needs the Anglo churches have to avoid vanishing. Renewal best describes the effort the denomination is making to bring vitality back to the worship service in an attempt to give these dying churches a fighting chance at survival. At that moment I felt like something fell into place because I’ve argued with many worship leaders throughout the years that worship is not only about music and that music is “in service to, namely, liturgy.” Music in service of God’s story enhances the narrative and unpacks Biblical truth in a meaningful way allowing us to participate and respond.
F. Russell Mitman addressing the art of transposition explains that “every expression in a worship service, ... becomes a transposition of the text in its new context… The expression, through in a different context, will sound like the original and become a means by which the worshiper may be put in touch with the Word of God witnessed to in the text itself.” Music depicted this way allows the worshiper to be in touch with God by rendering God’s story through an expression that engages and forms
