Who Am I ? “Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” Dr. Seuss once wrote this poem which was music to my ears growing up. It fascinated me to think that in this gigantic world filled with 7 billion people that I was the only Amanda A Laryea to ever walk its surface. Until about 8 years later on a random Facebook search, I found about four other individuals who share my name. However, our similar names do not connote similar personality or behavior. I have been me for as I can remember but determining who I am as an individual, as a student, and as a friend has not always been concreate.
There have been multiple points throughout my life where I have struggled with my self identification, not in the sense of gender or sexuality, but rather in the sense of ideology and spirituality. With all the influence of social media, television personnel celebrities and trends it is very easy to get lost in the mix and become a slave to pop culture. My mother, my cultural background and experiences have helped me put the puzzle pieces together as to who I am and what I will become. They have taught me …show more content…
When I was three years old, my mother and father gathered up all of their children and crossed the big ocean in hopes of a new beginning and a better future for their children. Leaving behind the familiar faces we grew up with and the scenery we fell asleep under was very difficult for my family, for no one knew what a new country would hold, but the faith of a better beginning helped us persevere. The transition was not difficult on my part for I had no deep connection to Ghana other than the fact that I was from there and I spoke two of its infinitive languages. I had no recollection of how the events unfolding would mold my personality and my perspective in life till I began attending Overlook Primary School a few months
