What Effect Does Technology Have On The Environment

“You can 't make positive choices for the rest of your life without an environment that makes those choices easy, natural, and enjoyable.” (Deepak Chopra)5 The environment plays an enormous factor whether an innovation is introduced or not. The effects an innovation has on the environment can either make or break the entire project. If the effects are negative, then it is likely the project will not reach it’s next stage. However, technology is a brilliant thing. Many people in todays society do not look past cell phones or the internet, and therefore do not realize that technology can actually help the environment. Fortunately, engineers have created many innovations that can alter how things are done, and in turn improve the quality of …show more content…
By 2050, it is expected that this ratio will change to 80:20, therefore the need for food will increase. Dickson Despommier said a great statement that “the world would be a much better place if we had vertical farming”. Vertical farming is a process of growing crops in a building that is many stories high, using LED lighting, Cloth Medium, and Aeroponics. Essentially, the plants are created “using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil” 3 , and LED lights that provide the plants the photosynthesis they need to grow. There are many benefits that can be seen using vertical farming. ”We 're growing in 16 days what otherwise takes 30 days in a field—using 95 percent less water, about 50 percent less fertilizers, zero pesticides, herbicides, fungicides," says one CEO. 1 This is proving that with this method, crops are growing much quicker, and more efficient. Since this method is monitored, it is said to be more safe, as it is pesticide-free, and there is a reduced contamination risk.4 It is becoming necessary to introduce vertical farming since by 2050 there will be approximately nine billion people. Since the population is growing exponentially, there will be a greater need for food production. If harvest continues horizontally, in order to support the population, the land will need to increase. If more land is being used up to produce food, there will be less space for people to live. Since there will be more people, the demand for more stores will increase and therefore more room will be needed. This is why vertical farming is actually the better option. By using technology in an environmentally friendly way, engineers can ensure better quality food, and many other benefits for the human

The Han Dynasty is well known for the imperial expansions of China. This allowed many trades and communications, such as technology, with other classical empires, more importantly the Roman Empire. During the Classical Period (600 B.C.E- 600 C.E) the Han Dynasty and Roman Empire possessed different attitudes towards technology. The Han, who were more optimistic about technology focused on the outlook, craftsmanship and advancement of technology, while the Romans concept clarified and organized technology models and types of government interventions which divided the social classes. For centuries, nations have been innovating ways for a better life.…

As technology becomes a more influential part of human society, questions are raised considering its impact on society. Clive Thompson’s article, Smarter than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better, addresses this issue by stating that technology has a positive effect on society. Jenna Wortham’s article, I Had a Nice Time with You Tonight. On the App., presents a similar argument, but takes a different approach, by making her argument more grounded in everyday life. Thompson’s analysis of how technology positively affects humanity can help shed light on Wortham’s observations about present day technology’s positive effects on communication.…

The intense famines in Africa are the result of many interwoven factors, but is the final straw the lack of water? It seems that the areas that can grow crops are over-farmed, and without heat-resistant seeds and irrigation the crops that do survive are not enough. Multiple years of crop failure are the foreshadowing of famine, pulling thousands already living in poverty into the cycle of famine, illness and death. Corrupt governments misuse donated funds to support military and other ventures, keeping the growing population in poverty. Many countries even rely on foreign food donations to support their people.…

Conventional farming is defined as the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides in farming. The problem with this method is that if these practices are not used correctly, it will drain the proteins from your crops and contaminate the soil especially if the farmer is not rotating his/her crops. Rotating crops adds nutrients back to the soil but if not, the soil becomes at risk for erosion when high winds or heavy rain comes. Without good soil, the crops being grown will not have the necessary nutrients that is needed for the human body to stay healthy. Due to these issues, we feel like the first step to finding a solution to this method is to properly educate the future farmers of this community about how to properly farm.…

Gardening activist and director Roger Doiron hosted a TEDxDirigo talk titled, “A Subversive Plot: How to Grow a Revolution in Your Own Backyard”, in which he encourages his audience to begin “subversive plot” gardening. Doiron starts by describing that gardening is a subversive activity because food is essentially a form of energy and power. When people grow and harvest their own food, they are taking control “over their diet…health, [and] pocket books”. As someone continues to pursue a gardening lifestyle, they begin to remove that power from “other actors in society that currently have power over food and health”.…

In the article, “Food Security: The Challenge of Feeding 9 Billion People,” published on January 28, 2010, Charles Godfray asserts that because of the continuing growing population and the growth of food consumption, the demand for food will increase for at least 40 years due to the lack of certain factors which could prevent the issues being faced with the demand for food. Godfray supports his implication by supplying the reader with a variety of causes as to why the demand for food has continued to rise such as the yield gap, production limits, the change of diets, yet at the same time provides solutions to these certain complications which could reduce the demand for so much food. Moreover, Godfray wishes to convey the readers into understanding the importance of reducing the impact of the food system on the environment and the certain precautions or actions that can be taken in order to better the situation by creating a “multifaceted and linked global strategy” to…
