Wake up Eddie, wake up. It’s past nine. You’re going to be late; I hear a fading voice inside my head from far apart. As I open my eyes I see my mom shaking my body to wake me up. I checked the clock hanging on the wall and it was nine past fifteen. I quickly jumped off my bed and ran towards the bathroom. When I came out my mom had a suit and pant with a nice tie ready for me for the day. How could you sleep-in in a day like today, my mom asked. I couldn’t fall asleep last night. The nervousness didn’t let me sleep, I replied. Well, don’t be, you will do just fine. Your brothers are already ready, so get ready and come downstairs for breakfast, she relied. After she left I started changing my clothes and as I was getting ready a feeling of …show more content…
I am coming mom, I replied. I walked down the stairs to get some breakfast and start my day right. As I was walking down the stairs, I saw three men dressed in black suit and tie devouring the breakfast feast prepared by mom. I sat on the chair and my mom served me some breakfast. When we were eating my dad walks in and sits along with us. Today’s the day, he says in his husky voice. Every one stopped for a second and the environment of the breakfast table changed. I stopped and paid my full attention to him. He began calling Names-Kevin, Matt, Judy, Albert, Justin, Robin, Jake and lastly Eddie. As he called my brother’s name I quickly stopped and looked at them. It took me few seconds to sink the fact that he just called my name. My brothers and I looked at each other confused and

James and I just stared at each other for a few seconds with blank expressions. I decided to remind my mother that James and I had been asleep until she had awoken us and brought us to this cold, white basement. I made sure to let her know that James and I had been well behaved and hadn’t broken anything like other times we had visited places. My mother sniffled and giggled at me; she then said that I didn’t need to worry, we weren’t getting in trouble. My mother then asked if it was okay for her to explain why we were hiding in this basement and why we left so late at night.…

My mind was running its own thoughts as it planned the day I had ahead of me. I walked into my parents’ room, taking a sip of hot coffee from my mother’s mug. I knew she hated it when she would suck her teeth together and gesture me to get my own. The taste of the coffee would get me up and if I tried to make it like hers, I’d fail. She would always be rushing to get the first things done in my father’s family business, the smell of iron running through her oil stained t-shirts.…

Every Saturday, I distinctly recall the smell of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. The radio would be playing in the background, masked by the overwhelming chatter occurring throughout the house. So many things happening in such a small space: what I remember most, is the sound of laughter, and the smiles that surrounded me. My grandpa hollering because he cannot hear the television, my mother still drowsy from the sleepless night, My grandmother singing to the radio that was barely audible over the commotion, and me, invariably sat looking at all that surrounded me, enthralled at how lucky I was to have a heart so full.…
