10 Person Virtual Team

My 10 person virtual team consists of five women and five men. They live on the West Coast and each of them is in the medical field and work for Kaiser Hospital and other hospitals in the area. The purpose of the virtual team is to perform research and to garner experience with performing research together as a virtual team in addition to working individually. With this virtual team each member will do research on the topic of AIDS. It appears that AIDS is no longer in the news as often as before. We want to know if the numbers have increased, decreased, or stayed the same. Because there are 10 persons on the team, I broke the team into two pairs consisting of five people on each team. With virtual teams, the problem increases considerably and problems are exacerbated due to distance, time zones, commitments, etc. “Not everyone can perform well in a virtual team environment. The members should be self- motivated and able to work independently. They need to be able to keep working effectively,” (Time Management, n.d., 2005). As we see, there are many variables to consider when working with a virtual team. Not many people perform well individually in an office. Apply that issue with a virtual team and you are asking for even more trouble. When you are not live and in person and meeting each other, several variables are lacking. Some of the important variables that are lacking are being open to new ideas. Since people are on different time schedules and trying to set times to meet each other online virtually, this creates problems. With this issue in mind it is difficult for virtual teams to be open to new ideas. Some members will get the email about this issue later than others will and will not have time to think about it as other members have already spoken to each other concerning this issue. According to Angelo Kinicki (2012), there are eight characteristics of being effective team players. Some of these eight characteristics are “being open to new ideas and having other ways of working. Being able to share information, experience and knowledge that a member/s/ specialize in. Having the opportunities to seeking improvement. Being able to join teams that you value highly and in return able to be committed on that team; being reliable with members, doing what each other are saying and being respectful; results are oriented,” (Kinicki, 2012, p. 236). As we see there are many variables to consider when dealing with virtual teams. With the many characteristics that are lacking with virtual teams, being able to discuss these issues and resolve these issues takes time, which as we see is difficult at times
