A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words Analysis

There are many great ads, but the great ones are those with a deeper meaning other than the obvious one that everyone is able to see. These types of ads have the ability to challenge the audience and make them think on a deeper level. It all depends on how creative the specific person thinks and if they are able to capture these underlying meanings. A well-known phrase and quote by Napoleon Bonaparte states that “A picture is worth a thousand words.” In the picture chosen, it is truly worth a thousand words, and from what I see, meanings as well. The photo is of a little girl and the viewer is able to see what the girl is thinking of. From a quick glance, a person may not see much and just assume that it simply represents what the child thinks of and nothing more. But from a close observation, the picture can be either an advertisement to parents for the product, or it can represent the average child’s imagination. The ad contains ethos and pathos. In between the “pieces” of her head, displays creations made of Play-Doh that the girl thinks of. The things she thinks of consists of a castle, a princess, unicorns, bumble bees, flowers, balloons, rainbows, flying ducks, etc. With this in mind, most would believe the entire purpose of the picture would be for Hasbro to display what children are able to create with their product, Play-Doh. Because the picture is filled with color, it can be assumed that the Play-Doh company aims to attract attention to the picture, most likely children, which could get parents involved and buy the product for their children. Going with this logic, if the ad was only viewed as an advertisement, it wouldn’t be very effective. This is mostly because the ad lacks logos, or the logical appeal.
