The level of competition within auto industry is intense. Automakers compete primarily on the basis of price, fuel economy, reliability, styling and utility. Barriers for entry are high and steady. The list of top performers includes General Motors, Toyota and Ford.
General Motors (GM) has been Ford’s competitor since 1920’s. Corporation is headquartered in Detroit and operates in about 157 countries, employing close to 207,000 people. Its most notable industry brands include Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac. There has been a push from the people and governments worldwide to move towards more environment friendly automobiles, as well as develop operations that reduce the overall environmental impacts of manufacturing facilities. Thru collaboration with suppliers and experts outside the traditional auto industry (example, Microsoft), Ford was able to offer new technologies (example, SYNC) to provide more convenient driving experience, as well as to make driving safer with developing safety and accident-avoidance technologies.
Ford uses technological innovations not only for increasing competitiveness of the final product. New technologies are used to improve distribution, information analysis, data mining and predictive modeling thus enabling highly effective reporting, trending, segmentation, customer scoring, and customer life-cycle analysis.
