Both rich and poor countries have certain characteristics which makes it possible to categorize them in terms of development. Rich more economically developed countries generally have a high average income per capita, they generally have a high literacy level, the population have a high life expectancy, the death rate is relatively low for the size of the population, the majority of the population live in major cities, and the health of the population is high. On the other hand characteristics of a poor country include: low average income per capita, with low life expectancy, high population growth, a high mortality rate, high unemployment, a lot of the jobs center around the farming profession and the populations health is relatively …show more content…
‘Other statistics to do with Poverty in Africa include 75% of the worlds poorest countries are African and 589 million people in Africa don 't have access to electricity and have to rely on biomass fuels such as wood and charcoal in order to cook and heat their homes’ (3). There are many reasons why poverty is such a big concern in Africa such as: Corruption within the governments of some African countries doesn 't allow money to reach the population, although Africa is rich in natural resources it is too poor to redistribute these resources and economically benefit from them, ‘the concerns with disease also affect poverty in Africa as it reduces the working population, added to this all the wealth is held by the ‘uninfected healthy population’ making it harder for the poor to reduce the gap’ (5), another reason is the lack of education and high level of illiteracy in the region, doesn 't allow children and young adults access to the higher paying
