An example of her spreading light is when she is discussing with her family reasons to stay in Germany. Her point is, “ ‘And my family,’ said Mother, and then the entire family joined in, ‘Has been here for almost one thousand years!’ “ (pg. 6). When she says this it demonstrates that she hopes there is no reason to leave because she knows that her family has survived in Germany all those years. Her thought is, why not them? After Erika says she doesn’t think she’ll make the next selections, Daniel yells out, “ ‘Try’ I had called to her” (pg. 99). This demonstrates the process of spreading light because he has hope that Erika can make it and he is giving hope to her. The last point that proves Daniel shows hope is when he comes across the thought that, “ I have never before now even entertained the possibility of Rosa’s being dead.” (pg. 121).
