Importance Of Hope In Daniel's Story

Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Adolf Hitler was the darkness and he would overpower as many candles as he could when he had the chance. But, even though he was getting stronger, some candles wouldn’t be overtaken. As the stronger candles spread light, other candles were brought back and were able to defy the darkness in hope that the light would spread everywhere. The book “Daniel’s Story” tells the struggle of a young Jewish boy growing up in Germany throughout World War II. In this story, hope is a candle in the darkness. Erika, Mother, and Daniel are all strong candles in defeating the darkness. No doubt, Erika is one of the main candles in the story. When she was at a youth meeting in Lodz, …show more content…
An example of her spreading light is when she is discussing with her family reasons to stay in Germany. Her point is, “ ‘And my family,’ said Mother, and then the entire family joined in, ‘Has been here for almost one thousand years!’ “ (pg. 6). When she says this it demonstrates that she hopes there is no reason to leave because she knows that her family has survived in Germany all those years. Her thought is, why not them? Another point in the book where Mother demonstrates hope is when she stretches out their rations in Lodz.. At this time Daniel states, “Because Mother was so frugal and clever at stretching out our rations, none of us were yet suffering from the effects of starvation.” (pg. 44). This shows that she hopes that stretching out their rations will be enough for them to survive for longer. The final point that proves Mother is a candle is at the selections in Lodz and Mother tried to save Mia. Daniel observes, “Mother ran for Mia, but Father pulled her back because Mia was already too far away.” (pg. 49). Her actions show that she hoped she could make it to save Mia in time even if it meant risking her own life. Although she was only involved in half of the book, Mother was a strong candle in the …show more content…
One example when Daniel demonstrates hope was when Adam asked Daniel if he could take pictures of Auschwitz and as Daniel says in the book, he replies, “Then the next day I told Adam I’d do it.” (pg. 91). This demonstrates hope because by accepting to take the pictures, Daniel has hope they can do something to help. Another time where Daniel spreads light is when him and Father talk to Erika at the fence in Auschwitz. After Erika says she doesn’t think she’ll make the next selections, Daniel yells out, “ ‘Try’ I had called to her” (pg. 99). This demonstrates the process of spreading light because he has hope that Erika can make it and he is giving hope to her. The last point that proves Daniel shows hope is when he comes across the thought that, “ I have never before now even entertained the possibility of Rosa’s being dead.” (pg. 121). This shows hope because it proves that he always had hope she was alive and never doubted that. When Daniel was in a situation of complete darkness he was able to bring light and stay a lit for
