In Matthew 22:39 Jesus states “And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” What does this command mean? It means that yes in order to love God true in our hearts that we also love our neighbors true in our hearts. For God is love and loving him loyally means the feeling of love can inspire us to love others. This command in many cases mean we must deny ourselves for the good of others. This is very challenging to do because we as man can be very selfish. This quality of self-love is the basis of the cause to many sins due to our own desires. God wants us to love our neighbor and respect them with love as we do ourselves. He wants us to have a good will to all. Which means sometimes we will be forgetting ourselves to love God and our neighbor of God. God feels if you can “love your brother” rightly than it serves as evidence of your sincere love for him. “If anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen” (Poythress). This wish or command from God is also stated through Jesus in the gospel of John in the New Testament, “Whoever loves God must also love his brother” (NIV, John 4:19-21). He felt that if someone said they loved God, but despised their brother, that person was a liar and did not truly love God or understand the kind of love he longed for from us. Even in Exodus the ten commandments by Moses there are two Commandments being; “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour” and the other commandment, “Thou salt not covet they neighbor’s house” (NIV, Exodus 20:1-17). Our neighbors are those that are around us, including our enemies. This also means that you will love your enemies as well. Who are your enemies? Who despises you? This is how we should live our lives for love of God first and foremost and secondly to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. As stated in "The Beatitudes," "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy" and "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God" (Bible, Matthew 5:3-11). These scriptures say a lot to us reinstating what Matthew has written in how we should live our lives and follow the laws stated by Jesus in The Greatest Commandment so that we can obtain our peace of heart and give our love, ourselves selflessly to God. For when Jesus answered this question, the religious leaders and the Pharisees knew that he had answered well. After this question was answered Jesus also asked and answered a question about his son ship to God and from then on his answers showed his wisdom and those that questioned him never dared to ask Jesus any more questions. They knew that he was the son of the Lord. All knew and understood that these two Greatest Commandments were to be the law and the prophecies to live
