With the national average of sleep for teenagers being nine hours, 80% of teens are not getting that amount (“Survey:Teens…Sleep”). This is one of the main factors to why the number of cases for depression in teens has been increasing. New studies were conducted that found teens who did not get the correct amount of sleep were three times more likely to be depressed than teens with the correct amount of sleep (Harding). The study also revealed that 62% of teens had symptoms of depression and were three times more likely to have symptoms of depression, compared to their well rested friends. With high school being the most important competitive years due to college, students are under a lot of pressure to perform at their best, taking AP courses and participating in sports.
