Introduction
Getting students to speak English in class maybe the most difficult task many teachers face. This is based on my research and the experiences of other teachers who are teaching this subject. Students often think that the ability to speak a language is the product of language learning, but speaking is also a crucial part of the language learning process. Furthermore, speaking skills, like listening skills are often neglected in the classroom. From my experience, it is difficult for students to speak appropriate English in the classroom because of the limited language use in their real lives. They are afraid to use the language they learnt because they wanted to avoid making mistake while performing it. They feel embarrassed when they made mistakes while communicating. They also feel comfortable to use their native language when responding to my questions. Even if they tried to answer the questions, they only reply it in short and simple sentence. They understood the questions asked but they need time to translating it in their native language before they speak. This kind of action is a burdensome to them. This makes me wonder; what is their problem and how can I help them? I always think that as a teacher I need to find a way to help my pupils to develop their speaking skills. This is why I have started my action research to find a way to help and guide my pupils. To support my finding, I have did some research with my colleagues regarding their experiences in teaching English subject. From the feedback, I have find out that we share almost the same problems, such as pupils’ lack of confidence, shy, afraid making mistakes and not mention their family education.
Focus of the study
The focus of the study of my research is; to encourage my pupils to communicate in English. What are the activities I can use to encourage them to speak? There are many activities I can used to encourage them speaking, one of it is using role play. The question is; is role playing activity suitable for my pupils? To find out the answer, I need to carry out the role play activity in my class with my Year Two pupils. The role play activity should be within their level. The dialogues use should be simple and fun where everyone can participate in it.
