Reducing homework is also another way to reduce students nodding off in class. A study in Australia and research in the United States suggests that more homework actually lowers test scores. (Wolchover www.huffingtonpost.com) The study showed that excessive time spent on homework actually lowered grades on tests. The research done in the United States suggests that homework is often busy work assigned because topics were not covered in class. Imagine a student is taking 8 classes over the course of a day in High school. If six of those classes assign forty-five minutes of homework each, the student now have an additional four and a half hours of school work to do. Now what if the student participates in an extracurricular activity such as football or volleyball. That practice could last an additional two and a half hours. That 's seven hours of out of school activities and homework. If the student is at school for seven hours, that only leaves ten hours outside of school. A teenager needs about nine hours of sleep each night to be fully rested. This math leaves our exhausted student with only one hour of free time. The possibility for activities of homework or additional activities or duties to run into that hours is likely depending on the student’s activity choices or family life. If a student’s life consists almost entirely of school and school work they’re missing out on one of the most important things in life, enjoying it. I find that from my own experience, one of the most exhausting things about school, is having no free time to relax or spend time with friends.
