Hester Prynne, the main character, has a hard time grasping the idea that she committed a very atrocious sin, adultery. She is harshly mocked and for the rest of her life chose to wear a letter "A" on her chest to remind her of the sin she committed. Eventually she realizes that the best way to receive redemption is to just try to become better and help others. She does this by sewing items for people. Hester was always worried whether she would go to heaven or hell but in the end she realized that she just needed to keep going and that she would end up where she was supposed to end up (Hawthorne). Lots of people are scared to die because they know that they have committed a large sin. People need to start trying to earn their forgiveness so they don’t have to live life knowing that they have no chance in the afterlife.
