The story takes place in the Sahara Desert where the narrator meets the little prince who is out on an adventure after he gets tired of his weariness in his own planet. Other places that function as setting are asteroids 325, 326, 327, 328 and 330 which the little prince visited before he got to earth. No particular time is mentioned as to when the story happens. But, the narrator says it occurs six years after his plane crashed in the desert.

First is the one inhabited by a lone king who has no subjects. Second is the planet with a very vain man who only seeks admiration from others. Third is the planet of a drunkard who drinks out of shame of him being a drunkard. Fourth is the planet inhabited by a businessman so busy counting the stars to own them. The fifth planet is where a lamplighter lives spending his entire existence following orders of extinguishing and re-lighting a lamp post. Then, the sixth planet is where he meets an old geographer who could not even describe his own planet because he doesn’t get to wander for he doesn’t leave his desk. He meets a yellow snake who claimed it could send the prince back home if ever he wishes to. He also meets a desert flower who seldom see men coming and tells him that these men live hard lives because they let themselves be blown by the wind for they have no roots. The prince gets disappointed when, after climbing the highest mountain he still sees no human. He tries to shout but only to echo back at him. Thus, he thought people can only repeat what he is saying. Then he meets plenty of roses which made him cry thinking that his rose is so common after all. While crying, a fox sees him and asks to be tamed. The prince took time to tame the fox until they became friends. The fox made him realize that his rose is unique and special because it is only she whom he loves and whom he feels responsible for. The Prince and the fox developed a special bond of friendship and they were sad when they finally parted.
After the fox, the prince meets a railway switchman who tells him how passengers always come rushing from one place to another, never satisfied with what and where they are. The prince also meets a merchant who sells pills that eliminates thirst and saves fifty-three minutes a week. The prince exclaimed that he would rather use that extra time finding fresh
