My grandma on my dad’s side was born in Georgiana, Alabama. I would say that I have a white, Midwest, law enforcement, upper middle-class culture. This makes you more empathetic to those who are struggling to get what they need and are working hard, but falling short. The value of education in my self-culture comes from being in an upper middleclass family. Both of my parents attended college. My mother has a bachelor’s degree, and my father has his masters. My parents have always emphasized the importance of education and how the more you know, and the higher education you have, the better off you will be financially in the future. My parents want my sisters and I to be as well off, or better off than my family is now, and in order to do that, we must all get our college degrees, and we must all work hard to become highly qualified in our prospective fields. The final value that is extremely important to how I view myself and how I conduct my actions is respect. My high value for respect has come from being in a law enforcement family. My mother was a police officer before she had children, and my father is now the chief of police in Merriam, Kansas, where I was born. When you come from a law enforcement family, you learn to value those who risk their lives to keep you safe. You

In "The Danger of Telling Poor Kids That College Is the Key to Social Mobility" posted on The Atlantic on January 16, 2014, writer and teacher Andrew Simmons states his thoughts and ideas about higher education to the impoverished population and why it isn 't for poor kids. He recently had a high school student write an essay about what she wants to do with her future. She had been told, rather preached to, that if she, "made good grades and a ticket to a good college would lead to a good job, one that would guarantee her financial independence"(para. 2). He acknowledges the fact that "they don 't mean to suggest that there is no other point to higher education" (para 3), but he also argues the fact that they are told to go to college it 'll…

The generation here in the Yakima valley want to have a higher education and a higher job instead of the lowest one. We simply think that we just fit in the lowest ambition because someone had told us or because we aren’t enough smart to go further. As Tucker said in the education gap at the bottom “There is no future down there anymore… therefore, we have to find a way to educate all of our young people to a very high standard” (Friedman 361). It is truth that having a low job will take us to nothing because there’s no future for us. And it is truth that we have to educate ourselves that will take us to a higher level.…

I remember always peering through the window by the stairs as the snow fell then sledding down the snowy driveway with glee. During my childhood, I spent a year in China experiencing my cultural roots. My family then moved to Los Angeles where I have spent nearly thirteen years of my life exposed to a blend of different cultures and communities. The diversity encourages me to stay true to my background and enjoy standing out rather than fitting in.…

American Dream Synthesis Essay The American Dream, or the idea that each American has an equal opportunity at success, is becoming untrue as certain people who are able to achieve higher education through financial abundance or are American-born have an unfair advantage compared to less wealthy immigrant citizens. People who have not received higher education, such as college, have a much diminished chance at achieving the American Dream. In today’s society, being unable to attend college leads to having minimal career choices. In reality, this is highly unfair, as people become practically forced into a job they do not want just because they can not pay to get into a university.…
