The acceptance of school uniforms is growing quicker all of the time, private schools have continuously had uniforms as their core piece, but they are becoming increasingly common in the public school world as well. Formally, if you wear a uniform you are known to be receiving an education from a private school. That is the typical stereotype. From 1999-2000 to 2013-14, the percentage of public schools that required their students to wear uniforms increased from 12 to 20 percent (U.S Department of Education, 2016). There are many pros and cons of this topic. Some of these include: Pro, school uniforms keep students attentive on their education, rather than their clothing. Going off of that pro, the con would be that school uniforms endorse conformity over individuality.

This study took place in Lafayette County, Mississippi where parents of fourth graders (426 surveys sent, 144 responses) received surveys sent home in the student’s backpacks. The survey included six questions, and one of those questions was broken down into 10 specific items. In this study the parents of fourth graders were selected as the focus due to the fact that in this age range (10 and 11), is the crucial time period of their social and emotional expansion. This is the time period where children start to care what they wear and where they start to feel like they belong to a certain group. A quick analysis of the results includes, fifty-six percent of parents who sent the survey back to the school either strongly preferred or simply preferred the use of school uniforms in public schools. When asked if this particular school should adopt the use of uniforms, 63% of parents agreed, 36% thought it should be optional for students, and 1% did not answer the question at all (West, Tidwwll, Bomba, & Elmore,
