Article 1: “Recognizing Strangers”
Summary
The article examines the way people define and identify strangers within the physical space. The article provides that strangers should be recognized through social demarcation and belonging. That is, in case a person invades different social territories, then he/she should be regarded as a stranger. The lawful recognition of people should not be based on post-Hegelian theory. This is because human beings have developed strategies to differentiate others from the society using baseless ideas. In other words, people identify strangers when there is a threat to both property and to other people. This means that reading the body of another person would reveal his/her intention. Recognizing Strangers asserts that recognizing a stranger by reading the body is “embedded in a discourse of survival” (25). In other words, people adopt the way on how to survive the proximity of strangers they have already figured and taken the shape in their daily encounters. Learning a person also involves engaging in daily activities whereby people interact face-to-face. This interaction does not only take place in the physical space, but also consider the live within the local encounter through habits and gesture of meeting others. In the physical environment, people are transformed into subject ‘though ideological functions” (23). For example, identifying people as “you there” is misrecognition since it produces “you” as the subject. Therefore, recognition of strange people operates in a visual economy whereby people identify between strange and familiar things as represented to the subject.
