Purpose of this lab is to find out how rate of reactions are affected by volume affects and determine which chemical affects the solution rate of reaction. Temperature was also a factor in discovering how it will affect the speed of the reaction. This was done by gathering certain chemicals and mixing them into a test tube then recording how long it took to change color. Temperature was tested by placing the test tube in ice water over a hot plate and slowlying increasing the temperature. Sodium thiosulfate slows the rate of reaction when increased and KI increases the rate of reaction when increased. Temperatures that are lower cause the reaction to be slower compared to when heated up.

The procedure was followed for the solution that used 1ml of Sodium thiosulfate and 2mL of the other chemicals. A 500mL beaker was filled with ice water and a thermometer was placed inside the water to record the temperature. When the temperature reached 2.3 degrees Celsius the solution was placed inside and the KI was then added into the solution. The hot beaker was placed onto the hot plate to slowly increase the temperature until it reached 18.7 degrees Celsius where a new solution was placed inside again. This repeated for 18.7, 35.0, and 51.6 degrees …show more content…
In the experiment the results showed how the reaction time of a reaction can be affected by different variables like temperature and quantity. The hypothesis of the experiment was that Sodium thiosulfate would be the agent that affects the time of the reaction. This was proven partially since the data from figure 3 and figure 1 shows that the higher concentration of Sodium thiosulfate causes the solution to take longer to occur therefore supporting the hypothesis. Data from figure 3 also shows that increasing KI in the solution causes the reaction time to occur faster. The data from figure 2 show that temperature also factors into the time it takes for the color change to occur. In an experiment performed by Qi Wong with the separation of Titanium(IV) from sulfuric acid it showed that temperature affects the rate at which reactions occur where in this case the rate at which titanium could be removed. (1) The results support the hypothesis but more testing could prove if Sodium thiosulfate and Potassium iodide are the only agents that effect the rate of reaction within the experiment. During the experimental section of the lab sources of error were failing to clean materials after being used and failing to add chemicals to the solution. When not enough materials were present during the first part this resulted in

In each tube, a certain amount of a starch solution and a potassium iodide solution was added. Then, each test tube was placed in three different baths, each with different temperatures: an ice water bath, a warm water bath, and a very warm water bath. After the solutions adjusted to the temperatures of the baths, they were taken out, and a certain amount of a potassium persulfate solution was added to each tube. After the potassium persulfate solution was added, the time it took for each reaction to occur was measured. For this experiment, the control variables were the amount of starch solution, the amount of potassium persulfate solution, the concentration of the substrate, and the absence of a…

The reactants that enzyme act upon with the substrate and the enzyme will bind together into the active site. The catalyst is important to the enzyme that breaks down the hydrogen peroxide and oxygen gas, where the rate of reaction of the catalyst will increase the temperature until it has reached the optimum temperature above 37°C is reached. If the optimum temperature has reached above 37°C then the kinetic energy and substrate molecules will begin to denature. The purpose of the lab was to determine the effects different temperature in yeast and hydrogen peroxide in a catalyst enzyme on reaction rate. There were many sources of errors that occur in the lab from having just one trial, using the same thermometer for each solution and inaccurate timing.…

It was predicted that when the pH level increases, the rate of reaction increases. Comparing the average mass’s in Figure 1 and 2, the hypothesis is supported. In Figure 1 and looking at Data Table 1, In the duration of 10 seconds the mass only decreased by 0.1 grams, which is slower when compared to Figure 2 and Data Table 2, where the mass decreased by 0.039 grams in a span of 10 seconds. The rate of reaction in the first Figure 1, slope 1, is showcasing the initial mass of the experiment to 30 seconds. Within the first 30 seconds the mass only decreased by 0.2 grams.…

Purpose The question being explored in this experiment is how temperature affects the rate of reaction of Alka-Seltzer, or effervescent tablets. The purpose of this is to see whether hotter temperatures or cooler temperatures cause the reaction to be quicker. Effervescent tablets are used to orally distribute medicine for patients and consumers (Laboratories SMB). By adding the tablets to water, the medicine is released into the solution, allowing the consumer to easily drink the solution and take the drugs needed for their health (Haack & Köberle).…

Specific environmental conditions may play a role in how enzyme activity is affected. We conducted an experiment to observe whether the change in temperature altered the reaction rate of an enzyme. The activity rate of our enzyme, catechol oxidase, was collected by analyzing the changes in absorption rate of the enzyme in a buffered catechol solution after being placed in four different temperatures. In which one solution remained out in room temperature being to be our negative control. Each of the four solutions were placed in their respective temperature environment and for every two minute intervals, over a twenty minute time process, we read the concentration levels through a spectrophotometer.…

In this lab, we carried out a variety of reactions using different chemicals and metals. A chemical reaction is when the chemical state of the substance you are testing rearranges its ionic and molecular structure. One of the reactions we experienced was single replacement, this consists of one ion switching places with another ion to form a new compound. Another reaction we saw was double replacement. In this reaction, two compounds ions are switched to form two new compounds.…
