If the baby is considered alive by the mother for quite some time, but then the mother decides on a late-term abortion, is this murder? The mother had acknowledged the baby as a person then upon the decision to receive an abortion, decided that the baby was no longer human. If the baby was once considered alive, can the mother take away this title? If not, does this become murder? If abortion is murder, this is a very unique situation. Even if the baby in the womb is not believed to be a human, it does not change the irrefutable fact that the baby is living being and that abortion is ending the life of something that is vital, functional, and alive. According to pro-lifer and writer for the New York Times, Ross Douthat, abortion’s rare situation requires legal action in the event that a woman does have an abortion as it differs from most other human affairs: "That while abortion is killing, while it is murder, it is also associated with a situation, pregnancy, that’s unlike any other in human affairs, and as such requires a distinctive legal response. No other potential murderer has his victim inside his body, no other potential murder victim is not in some sense fully physically visible and present to his assailant and the world, no other human person presents herself to her potential killer in what amounts to a pre-conscious state" (Douthat). Residing inside of the mother is a life that will eventually grow into a human if …show more content…
There have been many cases where a woman had an emotional, mental, or physical problem before her abortion. However, there are still many women who indeed suffer the effects of an abortion. There can be feelings of guilt from what the woman has done. Perhaps not at first, but possibly later on in her lifetime. “Post Abortion Stress Syndrome (PAS) affects everyone and is a form of post-traumatic stress disorder. The process of making an abortion choice, experiencing the procedure and living with the grief, pain and regret is certainly, at its very core, traumatic. As with any trauma, individuals often try to "forget" the ordeal and deny or ignore any pain that may result. Many simply don 't relate their distress to the abortion experience. At some point, however, memories resurface and the truth of this loss can no longer be denied. During these moments, the pain of post-abortion syndrome reveals itself in the hearts of millions of lives. The symptoms of post-abortion syndrome will not necessarily appear at the same time, nor is likely that any woman will experience the entire list. Some may occur immediately after an abortion and others much later.” (“Post Abortion Syndrome”). PAS does exist as a consequence of abortion. Though many stand up for abortion, you don’t often hear of a woman who has had an abortion and speaks up about it. Perhaps this is because of the abortion stigma, but this is more likely because the women who have had an abortion feel

In conclusion, the study also recognized that women can experience a strong condition of chronic and post-traumatic stress, if sought psychological treatment. Curley and Johnston’s journal discuss earlier studies of background information taken from female participants classified into three experimental groups: women who sought psychological treatment post-abortion, women who did not prefer psychological treatment post-abortion, and women who were not even pregnant at all. Curley and Johnston writes, “The Impact of Event Scale, Perinatal Grief Scale, Beck Depression Inventory and State-Trial Anxiety Inventory were used to measure psychological outcomes after abortion. A MANCOVA analysis found that after adjusting for coexisting psychopathology, participants who preferred treatment for psychological distress after abortion had significantly higher symptoms of psychological stress specific to the abortion on the Impact of Event Scale (IES) when compared to participants who preferred no treatment after abortion.” (305-06)…

Abortion is the planned termination of a human pregnancy. Several philosophers and activists have argued over if it is permissible. The author of A Defense of Abortion, Judith Jarvis Thomson, is correct about her argument that abortion is permissible even if the fetus is a person. This is because a woman’s right to bodily autonomy, which, combined with the woman’s own right to life, takes precedent over a fetus’s right to life. Even if people claim that she gave the fetus permission to be there, she should not be forced into going against her right to bodily autonomy.…

If the baby was not a living thing, he would not be able to open his mouth or move his spine. The mother, doctor, and all involved are committing murder every time an abortion is performed. Our law states that when a pregnant woman is murdered it is double homicide, so how come killing a baby in the womb separate isn’t murder? Our society has many double standards because we conform to what makes others happy, but it is time we take a stand and help save the lives of many innocent children. A solution to this problem is to follow our constitution and make abortions illegal.…

Motherhood should never be a punishment. Abortion is a fundamental right and should stay legal in all places for all people. A common misconception about abortion is that the child is able to feel being aborted and that it hurts the fetus. But what people do not know is that the child is actually not able to feel pain until around the twentieth week of gestation. Studies show that less than two percent of abortions occur after twenty weeks.…

Philosophical critique on the traditional argument against abortion Robert Bertram - UBC ID: 24675373 Phil 333 (001) - Biomedical Ethics The University of British Columbia The concept of morality in relation to abortion is a significant cause of conflict. These moral ambiguities are put into question by Pope John Paul II’s excerpts on the “unspeakable crime of abortion” with regards to the validity, committed fallacies, and the fetus’s content to the right to life (Paul II, 1995, pg. 1). Paul II's Evangelium Vitae (1995), states that aborting a fetus is the "deliberate and direct killing...of a human being in the initial phase of his or her existence". In the paragraphs to follow, this essay will reconstruct the argument, and analyze Thomson's, and Warren's objection to Paul II's statement.…

While some women might note a sense of relief, others may develop complications such as regret, depression, anger, shame and even suicidal thoughts and feelings. Depending on the mother’s stance on abortion can limit or greatly intensify her emotional state following the procedure. The effects can also be increased in women who might have been coerced or even forced into having the abortion performed. This often involves threats of physical harm or blackmail and accounts for 64% of all abortions and putting teens at higher risk of coerced abortion. “In 1995, a pregnant employee at Duluth (Minn.)…

For decades, abortion has been a controversial social topic and the subject of countless debates, both public and private. Many individuals have strong opinions on the subject, proudly wearing "pro-life" or "pro-choice" on their sleeves, so it 's no surprise that when someone writes about, or even mentions the subject with a definitive opinion, a multitude of people are offended, provoking a slew of debates. However, Sallie Tisdale, a nurse working at an abortion clinic, does the impossible and writes about abortion in her article, “We Do Abortions Here,” delving readers into salient moral questions about the topic – all while never revealing a clear-cut opinion on abortion itself. With a powerful ethos supported by the key components common sense,…

People are known for having sympathetic feelings to a child who is visible over the unborn fetus. However, pro-life activists hold that emotions that cannot form a basis for justifying birth. With the fetus being born or not being born; the fetus does have a chance in becoming a full human being. Viability of a fetus to survive outside the womb independently is when the fetus is able to get that ‘full human being’ status. Abortion also raises ethical issues of character.…

One health risk is psychological damage to mothers who had abortions. Chittom and Newton (2016) reported that “sadness, depression, guilt, anxiety, numbness, and shame are just a few of the psychological effects common to women who had abortions.” According to “Should Abortion be Legal” (2016), a study done by BMC Magazine reported that women who had abortions often have higher anxiety levels and are 154% more likely to commit suicide than other women. The Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology reported a study on the effects on men whose partners had abortions and it found that 51.6% had regrets, 45.2% felt sadness, and 25.8% experienced depression (“Should Abortion be Legal,” 2016). Chittom and Newton (2016) note that Pro-Life activists often explain the long term emotional, spiritual, psychological, and physical trauma after the procedure as post-abortion syndrome, which is not officially recognized by the medical world.…
