Early America was the site of two very different colonial experiments in early 17th century Chesapeake and New England. This difference was particularly true of the inhabitants of each colony who would imagine, invent and respond to political authority in very different ways. Chesapeake political authority was constructed according to the colony’s mercantile and imperial origins and would only change when its economic viability was threatened by internal violence and socio-demographic collapse. In contrast, New English political authority was founded on the basis of Puritan…

During the early 1730s New England colonies shifted from a heavily based Puritan society into a business oriented society. Life for colonists at this time became more solely focused around working and about business, leaving no time for practicing Puritanism. Religion soon became something of a past time, in which people would attend church less frequently and with less deeply-felt convictions as before. The Great Awakening was the result of a spiritual dryness among Protestant believers in the colonies. Noticing this lack of commitment, ministers set out to restore and renew the people’s faith.…

Equally, I believe that gentrification needs to be better regulated by the government. The way the government controls it currently takes away all the power from the residents. The inhabitants are the ones who put them in office and then the government does them a disservice. In the documentary (2012), even when the community members went to town halls, protested, offered alternatives and pleaded the administration went ahead with the development anyway. At the meeting one government official even said that the displaced business was "not of substantial economic benefit to the city" but what is really the definition of economic benefit.…

Among the first industries in the Northwest Ohio region were bicycle and farm wagon factories, setting the stage for the automobile industry, which would flourish in the 20th century. However, the industrial base was found in the glass industry. Due to the cheap and abundant supply of natural gas and significant monetary and land grants from the city, Edward Drummond Libbey moved his glass company from Massachusetts to Toledo in 1888. This move lead to the birth of major glass production companies in the area, including some that are still present today — Libbey Glass, Libbey-Owens-Ford (also known as Pilkington North America), Owens-Illinois Inc., and Owens-Corning. Most of the industry leaders were coming from New York and Boston and brought…

John Winthrop and Jonathan Edward’s sermons both relate to the puritan ideas; both create a call to action telling the people exactly what they should do in order to be considered faithful puritans. They are trying to influence people to view their ideas and believe in them. Although there are major significant similarities there are also extreme differences in the sermons due to the huge time gap between when these sermons were expressed to the people. The enlightenment time period, and the aging and evolving of the colonies both had a magnificent contribution on the tone, and drive of each sermon. John Winthrop’s sermon “A Model of Christian Charity” conveyed in 1630 at the very beginning when colonies were just starting to form, the wide…
