Drawing largely on the work of the linguistics Saussure, Peirce and Barthes, semiotics argues that verbal language is just one of many of meaning. Other think to keep in mind respect to happiness is the yellow outfits, which all the participants wear in several shots. Yellow is meant to connote happiness, but really it’s just used to mask what they truly feel. As matter of fact, all the outfits, the glitz and the glam plus the smiles just hide the horrible truth of what these women go through in order to appear on the stage. From this, we can conclude that the signifier in a first moment tries to cheat the audience transmitting that the signified is the beauty, but in reality the `` true signified´´ and therefore the message behind all the video is ``the happiness´´. The signifier transmit to the public that the most important thing in life is ``be happy´´, because you can be the most beautiful girl in the world, but if you are not really happy that is worthless.
Additionally, the song 's lyrics deal with the consequences of society 's high standards of beauty, and in "Pretty Hurts" eating disorders are depicted as one of the subjected results. The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…

Beauty matters. Well, at least for some. From the clothes you choose to wear (and the ones you don’t) to the items you own, everything surrounding you changes how people perceive you, even things completely out of someone’s control. Pressures to adhere to societal norms can cause long-term harm for certain people, but others can take this concept in stride. Due to different upbringings, along with different environmental influences, it allows for a range of perspectives.…

Julia Alvarez writes “I Want to Be Miss America”, to open people’s eyes to how something as small as a beauty pageant makes a huge difference on a teenage girl’s self-esteem and childhood. Alvarez makes a strong argument using pathos and ethos to sate her claim. She claims that everyday teenagers are trying to mold themselves into what they see in pageants in order to feel beautiful and fit in. Constantly trying to fit into the American ideal of beauty creates low self-esteem in teenagers and makes them feel left out.…

I decided to research gender stereotypes after studying “Pretty Hurts” by Beyonce. The writer raises the issue of how the media tells young women how to act and look if they want to be seen as “perfect”. This made me think about how girls all over the world are constantly trying to be seen as “perfect” and the lengths they go to better themselves. To find out more about how this applies to the real world, I decided to do my research report on this. My hypothesis is: “In today 's society woman are only judged by appearance, not by brains or personality”.…

Ferdinand de Saussure, the “father of modern linguistics” (845) is a prominent critic in the Structuralism movement. The understanding of Saussure’s theory in Structuralism will be examined using mathematical examples and applied to interpret The Great Gatsby. Saussure’s theory of literature centers on the “principle of the ‘arbitrary’ (purely conventional) nature of the sign” (846).…
