She also says how many of these students are unaware of these requirements and can lose their funding because of it. When students receive any form of financial aid they should also get an e-mail or something containing the information they need to know to keep that financial aid. This could help reduce the number of students who lose grants and other scholarships and help them have a better chance at obtaining a college degree. I can relate to having to maintain a GPA because I have to maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher to stay in the honors program. Also, I have to maintain a GPA of 2.75 to stay in the Medical Technology program but a GPA of 3.2 if I hope to get an internship for my senior year. Like many of the students in Paying the Price, I tend to stress about my GPA often and try to do everything to keep it up. I find myself studying and doing homework in between classes like Ian said he did. Almost every week I try to calculate my GPA to see if I am on track and if there is anything I need to improve. I also have been trying to take classes during the interims so I can focus more on each of my classes and have less work during the semester. This struck me because if students are not being prepared properly for college they will not be able to obtain a degree no matter what the cost of college is. Goldrick-Rab states that the high school graduation rate in Milwaukee public schools is only 61% when the statewide average is 88%. This is a huge gap and should be addressed. If students are not even graduating from high school they will not be able to find good jobs and provide for themselves which will only increase the number of poor people in Milwaukee. It is also said in the chapter that only 35% of students who did graduate from high school enrolled in college within a year with less that 13% obtaining a postsecondary degree of any kind after six years. These statistics show that students are not being properly educated during their K-12 education which really hurts them in their future. With few available jobs in Milwaukee a college degree is more important than ever if a person wants to be able to make a living. Therefore, people should try to focus on improving K-12 education as well as making college more accessible to everyone.
