Nonverbal communication is often just as powerful as vocal communication as they often express subconscious feelings or thoughts. A holistic view of a cultures language can only be achieved after examining both the verbal and nonverbal communication.
Nonverbal communication is important to anthropological research because they are either culturally or globally shared. Learning more about how members of a society communicate may reveal more about their culture or explain actions that couldn 't otherwise be explained.

This concept is important to understand the nonverbal communication within a religion. Artwork may display a happy face but have hidden meanings to people who are familiar with the display rules of the culture. This information is helpful in both keeping anthropologists safe and helping them blend into a culture better. Emotions are different within every culture and understanding the display rules will help ensure a holistic view of the culture.
The display rule relates to my personal experiences because I am of Asian decent. My grandparents, being traditional non-English speaking immigrants, have different display rules than I do. Sometimes I fail to understand how my grandparents are feeling because they mask their emotions so well. I 'm not sure whether my grandparents are just masking emotion or just aren 't very emotional people but now that I have knowledge of display rules, I may be able to understand them
