What is the stereotype of italy? Even though stereotypes have a negative connotation, I can not ignore the fact that they have a lot of power in how humanity views people and places. So how would someone describe Italy’s identity? Where did it come from? Is the stereotypes created by non Italians different than Italians’ stereotype of themselves? In America, that certainly is the case. People see Americans as lazy, ignorant and obnoxious, yet Americans think of themselves as hardworking, ambitious and successful. In the articles we read, they were both written by non Italians; Thucydides was an Athenian general, and Strabo was a Roman geographer and historian from present day Turkey. They searched for the differences instead of finding similarities to connect all of the diverse settlers together. The effects of demeaning other people as barbarians and less than humans would surely create divides in the culture. It may be the cause of the current divides between the northern and southern italians. With disconnection between current Italians, does the current patriotism or lack of patriotism counteract or fuel the historic story of the culture? A stronger sense of patriotism would (cause) a stronger community and similar identities as time progressed. Patriotism is a strong emotional connection that (brings) everyone together, so it is extremely powerful. It could shape values and lead to similar outlooks for an entire group of people, and therefore similarities in identities. The power of patriotism is too much to ignore, and I would want to focus on it while
