The main character of this film is Benjamin Martin, who is played by actor Mel Gibson. In this movie Benjamin Martin is a fictional character combined with real historical figures and those men are Francis Marion, Elijah Clarke, Daniel Morgan, Andrew Pickens, and Thomas Sumter. It took place during the American Revolutionary war in 1775-1783 to gain independence from Great Britain. Many ups and downs were in this films and times were tough. There were times where goodbyes had to be said because the soldiers didn’t know if they would make it back alive.
There’s one family in particular in this film that is examined. Benjamin Martin is the father of the family and has eight kids, five sons and two daughters. All of Benjamin’s boys dreamed of going to the war like he did. Martin never wanted to be apart of the American Revolution because when he fought in the French and Indian war and it still comes back to haunt him. Martin knew that he had to avenge his son 's death so he ended up going into the army and starting a militia, which was part of the Continental army. The army needed the militia to keep the British from heading north, so they put Benjamin in charge of creating the militia to keep the British in the south. When Martin killed the British soldiers practically by himself the British referred to him as a ghost. After they found out it was Martin, Tavington became irritated at the fact that it was him. In spite of Martin, Tavington and his soldiers gathered the people of the town and locked them in the church and burned it down. He wanted to let Martin know that he wasn’t scared and that the next person he was going after would be him. Right before the battle between the British army and the Continental army Tavington killed Martin’s other son Gabriel. Martin became even more angry and then knew the battle had already begun and he was going to take out all of his anger on
