Question One Per the case study, how does Motorola’s job sharing system fit with their business needs? First off, it is important to get a definition of what job sharing is. According to the textbook, “job sharing is a work arrangement in which two or more employees divide a job’s responsibilities, hours, and benefits among themselves” (Balkin, Cardy, & Gomez-Mejia, 2016, 2012, 2010). Now that we have that cleared up, we can dig into what the needs are for the business in order for job sharing. At Motorola in 2000, there was a substantial change in work hours in the East Kilbride plant operation. This change was there to bring into line all shifts throughout the entire organization. The case study on this specific topic, says that “managers may then need to be involved in work scheduling in job share posts during job sharers’ holidays” (Maxwell, 2008). I think it would be very smart and beneficial for upper level management of organizations to get involved in the scheduling process when it comes to job-sharing because they are going to need to know what all is going on and who all is going to be doing it. I believe that the business needs for any organization are the ones that were described in the article from Entrepreneur.com; the needs of your business and the needs of your employees. Those two things should always be taken into high consideration when doing any kind of work-life balance tasks for any organization.
Question Two Per the case study, what particular needs do female employees face in work-life balance arrangements such as job-sharing? There are a number of things that women face when it comes to trying to balance work and personal life. According to an article from the American Psychological Association,

It is especially crucial for women in the workforce today, that they know that job-sharing is a great opportunity to take advantage of. If they do take job-sharing, women need to be able to clarify things with their employers about all of the expectations that they are to uphold and let them know about the workload that they can handle. It is also important for them to share with their spouses about how hard they really need to work. Even though, organizations have a standard of requirements that are to be included, each individual employee is responsible for maintaining those requirements and also the ones that they make for themselves regarding their work-life balance.
