Ethical Dilemma for an Industrial Engineer There are many possible ethical dilemmas that an industrial engineer might face during their career. A common ethical dilemma that an industrial engineer might have would be dealing with repercussions from changing how a factory processes things. An industrial engineer would figure out how to make a system faster and more efficient, but in doing that it might eliminate the need for some people’s jobs. The workers whose jobs were changed would most likely get laid off because there wouldn’t be a need for them anymore in the company’s process. They wouldn’t still be doing the same job they were because that job would no longer exist. It’s an ethical dilemma because the industrial engineer would have to decide if they wanted to try to find other places for the workers to work, or just lay off workers. How an industrial engineer decides to approach this situation would affect their reputation. If they decided to lay off people who were no longer necessary in the manufacturing process, many other workers wouldn’t like the industrial engineer. Whereas if they decided to try to relocate them to a different position, other employees might like the industrial engineer even more.
