I was asked to consider the consequences of society today being plugged in all the time. To explain how social media and networking is affecting education, economy, and politics. In order to answer the questions above I first had to define the word consequence. According to dictionary.com consequence is defined as the outcome of something that previously occurred. As children we are often taught that consequences are bad which is not true. Throughout this essay I will explain the positive and negative effects of social media and social networking on the United States education, economics, and politics.

Social networking is in many ways good for our economy. Social media sites have created thousands of jobs. Online websites also allow for higher income and more sales. Many people follow a brand or a store on a social media page and this is essentially free advertising for the company, resulting in saved money. Although social networking has positively influenced the economy in the U.S. it can also harm it if misused. Misusing social media can harm job stability and future employment. Many interviewers have reported not hiring someone due to poor grammar and or spelling, profanity, drugs or alcohol, sexual content, or many other things on potential employee’s social networking profiles. In the 2012 Olympics some athletes could not participate due to racists comments posted to social networking pages. Social networking sites decrease employees ' productivity. About half of people in their 20s to 30s accessed social media while at work.
