Analysis Of Me Talk Pretty One Day

Reading, "Me Talk Pretty One Day", by David Sedaris, is like being at a stand-up comedy show. The article is full of puns and points that make you feel as though you are suffering through this French class with him. Despite all the humor in it, there are some main points I believe he is trying to convey. David Sedaris' main claim of perseverance is well argued, because the author never gives up in spite of a teacher who is rough with him, he spends extra time on his school work while immersing himself in the culture, and the author comes to realize he is not alone in his struggles.

First, don't quit. Even though the situation may be difficult and seem impossible, there is always a way to overcome it. The article shows us many examples of teacher that is not in any way, easy to get along with. She has sarcastic remarks on hand for every student and even resorts to physical abuse to assert her authority.

"The teacher continued her diatribe, and I settled back, bathing in the subtle beauty of each new curse and insult."(Sedaris, 1999).

From this quote, we see that after enduring the emotional and psychological and even sometimes physical abuse, Mr. Sedaris finally can understand the teacher's insults fully in French. While that may seem meaningless compared to what he had to suffer, to him it meant the world. The article starts with him only understanding half of what the teacher said in French to him. He never gave up, despite the anguish the teacher put him and his

(Sedaris 86) Essentially, it's a fight or flight response, and Sedaris has chosen to rise to the challenge. He moved to France for a reason, and even if he doesn't get it quite right every time, at least he's really trying. Eventually, through humour and hard work, he finds his way to a deeper understanding of the French language, and of himself.…

In addition, shy female students who were treated rudely by boys in the class felt marginalized and frustrated. This experience has taught me the importance of dealing with conflict immediately. When conflict with a student is ignored it does not go away. Rather, it grows and impacts other students who feel their needs are being ignored because of disrespect towards them that the teacher does nothing to…

Some may dream to have high school English classes write about their work, but for Leonard Pitts Jr. it is a reality. After recently reading three of Pitts’s articles it has been made apparent that he is a great writer in more than one way. Pitts uses many effective strategies in his articles: “Don’t lower the bar on education standards”, “Torture might work, but that’s not the issue”, and “The poor of Flint were left under the cover of darkness”. In “Don’t lower the bar on education standards”, Pitts analyzes the problems with schools lowering the bar for minorities.…

My Satire on Yelling Mrs. Ketterling suddenly burst into fiery fury wailing at me for not getting my essay done for English. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t anticipate a teacher screaming at me for something that I have not completed. Or, for that matter, when my parents are screaming at me because I didn’t do a chore at home. I love how their voices crack and become extremely loud and I even enjoy that my eardrums may break because of those lovely people.…

I believe the audience will be anyone from age 18 to 65 that’s looking to travel abroad and learn the language of the land. The audience would benefit from my analysis because it shows an actual experience of a man, who was older, but was still able to endure the painful torment of the teacher and locals, but still managed to bare threw it. David Sedaris was able to capture his first-hand experience and articulate that into a short essay for anyone looking to be as brave as he was and put himself in an uncomfortable situation to learn French. The audience would benefit because David Sedaris talks about the nitty gritty. He explains how although it was a dream come true for him, it was not rainbows and butterflies.…

Not everyone has something positive to make them who they are today. However, every so often it’s more common to have something negative, and so it can push you beyond your own boundaries. The person I am today is because of my big sister Thalia. In “Me Talk Pretty One Day” the narrators influence was his teacher, she was rude to her students just for mispronouncing French and judge her students on what they like on the first day of class and she never changed her attitude during the course of the story, I think she was a negative influence on him. (Sedaris, 635).…

I went from an exceptional student to one who talks back. Since freshman year Mrs. R had been my favorite teacher, even though I did not have her until I was a junior. She was kind and always there if you needed to take a breather in her class, or simply do whatever you needed to on the computer, if it was your lunch. I've heard students complain about how they did not like her and how annoying she was. However, I couldn't understand why they felt that way about Mrs. R. I never saw her the way they did.…

After analyzing “Me Talk Pretty One Day.”, my opinion on Sedaris’s goal has changed slightly. I believe he is focusing more on showing that, even under adverse conditions you can always accomplish what you’ve set out to do. In the first few paragraphs, he not only lays out his purpose of moving to France to learn the language but also how nervous he is to be back in school. Sedaris then touches on the teacher’s attitude towards him and the class. He is constantly setting the mood of the article as stressed, whether it be from the teacher's attitude or the foreign country he is in, but goes on to show that even under all these circumstances he succeeded in achieving the goal of learning French.…

After re-reading the short story, "Me Talk Pretty One Day", in deeper analysis, I believe his claim has changed to his account with his teacher. David’s point was clear stating specific accounts he and his fellow classmates had in the classroom. Davis relived these accounts by telling stories of how him and his classmates were treated. He told a story of how one of his classmates, a shy Korean girl, was poked in the eyelid with a pencil and the teacher showed little to no remorse.…
