Matilda: Overcoming Adversity Through Education
“Matilda” brightened theaters in 1996 and has since continued to leave a lasting impression. Born to neglectful parents, Matilda (Mara Wilson) is a bright child who at an early age was left with no other option than to find her independence. Her father (Danny DeVito), a crooked car salesman and her mother Zinnia (Rhea Perlman) an avid bingo attender, constantly ignore her. Left home alone all day, Matilda develops a love for reading and knowledge in general. Fast forward two years later, Harry sells a car to the intimidating, children hating enthusiast headmistress: Agatha Trunchbull (Pam Ferris), and Matilda finally starts school at Crunchum Hall Elementary. In the beginning of the movie a younger Matilda, around six months old, is seen sitting on the countertop writing her name in her baby food as the narrator makes the following statement: “The Wormwoods were so wrapped up in their own silly lives to notice they had a daughter. Had they paid any attention to her at all they would have noticed she was a rather extraordinary child” (Matilda,1996). In another scene a two-year-old Matilda is seen washing her face, preparing herself for the day. Four-year-old Matilda is then seen cooking her own breakfast, looking up the address of the library in a phonebook, then frequently walking the ten blocks there by herself. Matilda then develops an astounding vocabulary and intellect specializing in multiplication and reading. Two people who supported Matilda were the librarian and her teacher Ms. Honey. The librarian in the beginning of the movie introduced four-year-old Matilda to various books and also gave her the helpful insight about getting a library card so she wouldn’t have to come to the library every day. She was an important factor in Matilda’s literacy journey. Ms. Honey values knowledge, education, and intelligence and she went above and beyond to help Matilda’s educational journey. Ms. Honey spoke to Ms. Trunchbull about moving Matilda into a more advanced class and she even came to Matilda’s house to speak to her parents about college.
