I learned that through the VARK questionnaire that I am most successful when I use kinesthetic learning. When I was in third grade, and needed to prepare a speech, I used the mnemonic device of tapping my thigh with my hand to improve my ability to memorize my speech. The speech was timed and the rhythmic tapping helped keep my pace, as well as, like a song, it reminded me what came next in my speech. Once again, I find myself learning public speaking this time in college. I continue to use this mnemonic device to help improve my memory.
Three learning strategies to improve.
On the other hand, there are a few strategies for learning styles that I don’t incorporate into my life. The main three strategies are; highlighting text to grasp a better understanding of the material; reading aloud to further enhance absorption; and using my whiteboard to organize my thoughts and tasks. I am always interested in how I can improve my abilities to be a better student.
Highlighting. The learning strategy that I least use is highlighting material in the text. I find it difficult for me not to over highlight everything. In order for me to incorporate this strategy, I could read the text the first time without highlighting anything. Then once I understood the main points of the piece, I could then re-read it and highlight the important portions. In addition to just highlighting the text, I could color code the material using one color for the main points and a second …show more content…
Intuitive learning involves the ability to understand something immediately without the need for conscious reasoning. A way that this new learning strategy could work for me, for example, would be during a multiple choice exam. During the test I could rely on my knowledge of past experience, the study of the material, and then combining those two factors to intuitively be able to make the correct choice. I invented this specific learning style/strategy, because I am an innately an intuitive
