Do you believe that you have control of your destiny? With the use of strong emotional appeals “Invictus” by, William Ernest Henley and “The Iraq War Blog” by, Raed Jarrar, Faiza Al-Araji, and Khalid Jarrar answers the question: How much of what happens in our lives do we actually control? In both articles they state that we are the master of our fate and destiny. Henley states that readers have control of the way they react and handle certain negative situations in life and by reacting to them in positive ways, readers can overcome any obstacles thrown their way. In Invictus the author states,“ Black as the pit from pole to pole,/I thank whatever gods may be/For my unconquerable soul...And yet the menace of years/ Finds, and shall find, me unafraid” (Henley). With this quote the author draws his readers in by using emotional appeals. He makes his readers feel fear and hope due to the type of language and words he chooses to use such as, black as the pit”, unafraid, and menace. His use of pathos allows his readers to He wants his readers to see that by choosing to persevere and push through the difficult times, it allows them in many ways to actually have control over certain situations in a unique way. Henley wants his readers to know that they should never be afraid to take control of their destiny no matter how grueling it may be. The authors want the reader to know that through faith they can overcome any obstacles put in their way. In “The Iraq War Blog” the authors stated, “I still believe in that angel, or I wouldn’t be here, and I wouldn’t be able to cope with the daily difficulties” (Jarrar, Al-Araji, and Jarrar). By giving the real life experiences of a family in Iraq at the time, the authors were able to make their claim that much more credible and persuasive. The authors are really showing how you can take control of your destiny by keeping faith and always having something worth believing in. For the women in this blog, though she was mentally and emotionally drained, she never allowed herself to become spiritually drained and she never resorted to blaming God for all of her misfortunes, instead she looked at everything happening to her in an optimistic way. She chooses to believe in something bigger than herself, and is able to push through the rough time she is facing. The authors want us to know that in order to control your future, instead of just doing so on your own, you may just have to choose and be willing to put the fate of your future in something that is even higher than
