They don 't really have a problem expressing their political beliefs on campus, but inside the classroom is a different story. “Class depends and is way harder, because our school is liberal and close minded and teachers can be very condescending of you and make you feel uncomfortable if your political views are different than theirs, Says Coyne “but around my peers and friends I am totally comfortable with expressing my beliefs”. Karanasios has a similar feeling about being reluctant to share his political views “ In my business class I feel conformable talking about voting for Trump is ok, but anthropology class I don 't feel comfortable because i 'm in a class full of people who have very liberal views and I worry what they might think if I say I am trump supporter.” Feeling comfortable on campus talking about your beliefs is some that has become a problem on campus. Coyne and Karanasios both agree that there many of Trump’s beliefs that cause lots of controversy on campus and cause others to judge them for supporting Trump. “ I think the idea of the wall is his issue that this campus as an issue on, I think we need to have a stricter laws and people need to have documentations. What was once a grand and open space of ideas and endeavors now seems to be slowly grinding to a halt this space is the American university realm. What has slowly seeped in is the idea that student must be coddled and prevented from being presented with ideas that are quite frankly anti-anything they have perviously experienced, well at least this how Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt view the current trend of the American university system. Growing up this quote by Malcom X sets the tone for my attitude towards education. “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” In today’s world, a higher education is the cornerstone of life. Regarding the debate of a liberal education over the years, I concur with Shorris and his points in “On the Uses of a Liberal Education as a Weapon in the Hands of the Restless Poor” and want to qualify with Edmundson’s points in “On the Uses of a Liberal Education as Lite Entertainment for Bored College Students”. Edmundson used to think that a liberal education was beneficial for everyone and was originally for self-betterment.…

“Learning as Freedom”, by Michael S. Roth, is primarily a response to recent sentiments that higher education is a waste of resources. Roth states that his opposition frequently wonder why people who aren’t going to make lots of money in their future occupation bother with going to college. (1). According to Roth, advocates of this perspective see attending higher education as “buying a customized playlist of knowledge” (1), and nothing more. Therefore, if the knowledge gained will not insure the buyer great financial success, than why expend the resources to go in the first place?…

Personal Philosophy of the Student Affairs Field Reflecting on my personal college experience and those of my peers, I believe that the field of Student Affairs provides a unique and even essential opportunity to help shape the experience that student’s receive within the university setting. I strongly believe that students gain more from their college experience learning and growing outside of the classroom rather than inside. Self-discovery and personal exploration through extra-curricular activities and interpersonal interactions guide students through their academic careers and develop who they wish to become as an adult facing the “real world.” Student Affairs professionals help to ensure that each student begins their track to self-discovery…

As a Howard student, I will be able to reach my full potential intellectually and socially and strive for success in my intended field of study, Political Science. I’ve been interested in political science for a long time and what intrigued me the most was that I would be learning more about other countries and focusing on their cultures, belief systems, and stances on various international issues and crises. As well as an in-depth look at domestic politics and this country’s government, which goes perfectly with Howard’s convenient location in Washington, D.C. the home of Capitol Hill, The White House, and 177 foreign embassies.…

Eddie S. Glaude, writer of “The Real ‘Special Snowflakes’ on Campus Free-Speech Debates”, tackles a well-argued question asked by liberals and conservatives. Do students who are attending college universities have the right to protest on campus? Right off the bat, Glaude categorizes conservatives as those who are against freedom of speech. This is the first small yet obvious piece of bias- bagging on conservatives. By placing them in this category, students now look at all conservatives as people who are not only against their protest, but against any ideas the students may be protesting.…

There seem to be numerous groups on a college campus, each sharing at least one particular cultural trait in common. However, there is one group on campus that is composed of people from different cultural backgrounds and walks of life. These are the international students. This is an ever growing subset of those attending an American university, making up almost 820,000 students across all colleges and universities in the United States during the 2012-13 academic year (Institute of International Education). Even though the number of international students is growing consistently, around seven to eight percent per year over the past couple of years, there is still hostility and an exclusiveness towards this diverse group of students (Institute…

Freedom of speech is something that many have fought long and hard for everyone to have. College is supposed to help everyone get accustom to how things are in the real world. Having “safe spaces” on campuses deliberately hinders freedom of speech and it helps generate a world of more close minded people. While colleges are comprised of people from all around the world, everyone’s mind is not that diverse when it comes to thinking.…
