How To Write A Cover Letter

A cover letter is an introductory document you send with your résumé when you are applying for a job. It is a significant item for a Canadian applicant because many recruiters read this letter first. It not only supports your résumé, but it is also an opportunity for you to stand out from a variety of other applicants and to convince the recruiter to consider you in the remaining hiring procedures. It tells the hiring manager that you are applying for a position and briefly describes your qualifications for that position. The cover letter is not a duplication of the résumé; rather, it is a preview of who you are. Essentially, this means that the "Cover letter should expand and serve as a bridge to your résumé" (choosing Cover Letter Top 10 Tips. 2013). If the cover letter does its job well, it will lead the reader to follow it up with reading your résumé. Therefore, I strongly recommend you to pay more attention to the cover letter first and foremost. Now, I would like to go into further details as to what to include in a cover letter and how to go about organizing it.

Emmons’ article about portfolio cover letter is very informative. It not only covers insights from the instructors’ perspective from reading the letters, but also describes interpretations of the writers. I've learn that the purpose of the portfolio cover essays are for instructors to understand students’ work ethics and reflect upon their own teaching methods. However, the issue with these letters is that most of them are “scripted responses to… the narrative of progress- it begins with a reluctant, frightened student and ends with an articulate, confident writer” (Emmons 47). Often time, students tend to interpret the idea of them promptly fixing their mistakes and obligating to do well in the end.…

This letter is a formal appeal to you for assistance with the tuition fees for continuing my education. I had to suspend my education at HBU (Houston Baptist University) because of the increment in tuition fee; I came from a family with no savings, my mother was a single mother (61 years old going to 62) who raised me in a low-income apartment life, no education nor funds for her ending years. HBU (Houston Baptist University) recently funded a football team in which they did well for their first year, and I believe this is the more reason the tuition fee was increased; I am not an athlete, but it is my wish that my dream of going to school come true. I am currently working but having my dream job will set my life in order forever for I am about entering into a new chapter of my life.…

The biggest challenge I have when writing a cover letter is providing information about myself that is not already on my resume. I feel as though I repeat the things on my resume in complete and concise sentences, but I do not think that is the way to make a great cover letter. Also, I find it difficult to find the perfect length because I do not want to write too little of too much. Who to address the letter to is confusing to me as well, so I often just start the letter with a generic introduction.…
