The Dangers Of Identity Theft

Decent Essays
Identity theft is a crime where a person or group takes over the personal information of an individual primarily for financial gain. Although financial gain is the main reason for identity theft it is also a way for immigrants and criminals to take on a different persona, to actually live their life under the guise of another person. In the right hands, or rather the wrong hands, a person’s social security number is a direct link to their life, not just their finances, but many aspects of how they live and the benefits of which they obtain.

As consumers we have to think smart, we have to be aware of our surroundings. When online, we should look over the site we are about to type in our information. As a victim of identity theft I realize that staying safe is a difficult task, these people that steal personal information are difficult to see. It happens with barely a notice and sometimes, such in my case, without notice at all. The best we can do is to be aware that this is happening and know that it is our job, our responsibility to be the safe keepers of our private information. Awareness is key, always think before sharing, voicing, or entering a number. Monitor your bank and credit statements, watch your credit score and don’t simply throw out but destroy documents that are no longer needed. Take the time to be safe. Unfortunately, it is easier for the thief to acquire and accomplish the task of stealing your identity then it is for you to obtain it

Most times, it may say you have a good connection when you input all your card information, but as soon as you click ‘purchase’ you lose connection to the website. You then have to refresh the page to get back to where you were, and re-enter your card information. I believe this is one way hackers can get your information. Another way to prevent identity theft is by making sure the web page you’re purchasing an item from or putting your personal information on has a little lock symbol in the web search bar.…

Many reasons why identity theft is rampant is because credit bureaus, credit reporting agencies, and credit lenders do not hold themselves accountable for the theft. It has been estimated that millions of dollars are spent a year on identity theft victims. Businesses and companies offset the price of goods and services by making consumers pay higher prices (O’Neill & Xiao, 2005, p.33). Credit bureaus and lenders do not lose money on identity theft if anything it is a money making a scheme. The national identification cards assist the border representatives and other government officials more promptly in finding out the status of the immigration of people. Obtaining and availing an authorized card at the borders could imply that the individual did not come into the nation or across the border unlawfully. “The national identification card has significant details about the individual, including weight, height, and eye color, among other components, which make it for a person to forge or get a counterfeit of the document (Berger)”. It can, therefore, be argued that the national IDs contribute to the control of the number of immigrants in the nation for a specific length of time. Again, the national identification cards are uniform and hard to falsify or change.in this respect, the national ID cards will help minimize the possibility that a person could, deliberately or not, slip between the cracks of many governments.…
