Describing and Analyzing Important Topics

Our, my peers and I, very first exam in a college course took place this week, and much is to be gained from that experience. Effective studying and being productive during any and every opportunity to finalize classroom work are things that I have learned to be crucial when attempting to prepare for a test. Keeping in mind what we have learned about our learning preferences and their corresponding suggested studying techniques something that was used to everyone’s advantage because knowing those allowed us to test several studying/learning methods until we found something that could be of use to us. This week, we focused on applying much of the things we have learned up to this point in the course

Writing in cursive is helpful, for those who have mastered the art, when ideas or facts must be quickly jotted down before forgotten or before new information is thrown at you because of the impressive amount of letters that are able to be written with a single stroke. On the topic of note taking, a new and very helpful structure for note taking has been introduced to us. Chapter outlines can act as review sheets, an activity to keep you on task while reading a chapter, and a tool to ensure your understanding about the material you are reading. When writing a chapter outline, large/overall subjects are listed and broken down into information that tapers from most general to most specific. This week, I attempted to write outlines for chapters one and two and discovered that with practice this note taking strategy is fairly easy makes readings go by much faster with less distractions. I plan on using this strategy for every chapter assigned to read in this course and even future courses because I owe it (this strategy) credit for every piece of information I retained and was able to use this week on my

In a guided self-assessment of study habits and strategies, ED 3100 students have been challenged to embark on a journey of self-exploration in an effort to better understand our own learning processes, as well as determine how different methods of studying and learning may affect our overall success. Dr. Demars (2015) explains that exploration and knowledge of our own techniques and learning strategies will then empower us, as future educators, to facilitate the same attributes in our students. She emphasizes that the better we (as teachers) understand our own learning processes, the better we can understand those of our students, and consequently help them self-assess to achieve a better understanding of their own learning. Although this exploration has raised many questions for me, there were key themes that stood out amongst others. By constructing an unbiased system of measurement, I am experimenting with deliberate and strategic changes to my study habits that are explicitly designed to address and correct weaknesses in my current study habits that I will track over a period of four weeks.…

My advice to makayla is to never get stuck on one question no longer than five minutes. It's okay to skip a question and come back to it later once you have answer all of the other questions. It's also okay to guess intelligently on some of the questions. I feel that you shouldn't always linger on the same questions, because that can cause you to loose most of you time on the test. John When writing I think John should just write everything out first step-by-step.…

Actually, I am still in the most challenging academic course I have taken to date, AP United States History (APUSH). Furthermore, prior to this class I had never really had to study extensively to maintain high marks. APUSH has been different. Having little knowledge of this material, I have had to spend much more time studying.…

Instead of simply putting your brain on autopilot and jotting down notes you think will be on the quiz, you think about what the professor might be leaving out that is open for later discussion. Repetition of the phrase ‘essay topic’ or ‘quiz’ can give us an expectation of what might be coming next. Deeper thinking allows us to open up new discussions, ‘hidden’ arguments and ideas that others may have over looked. Awakening the latent curiosity within us is what will allow us to grow as scholars and as…

The reading for this week provided us with great strategies to implement into our classrooms that are research based to help our students be successful academically. These four key tools to success are notetaking, summarizing, homework, and practicing. In Ceri Dean’s chapter 6, he discusses that teachers should teach these at the beginning of each school year to give students concrete ways for student success (Dean,2012, pp.80-98). I found several “golden nuggets” in this reading that I will implement in the new school year.…

Wendy Kopp once said “Our teachers are operating just as effective leaders in the business world do. They set a vision that most people think is crazy. They convince the kids why it's important to accomplish the goal. And they are totally relentless.” It is because I have had many teachers push and challenge me to do my best that the business world is in my line of sight.…

Most people are not comfortable with silence. I am. Freshman year of high school was not a pleasant time in my life. I was a decidedly reserved child who worked best in silent solitude. In a recent interview, an interviewer seemed very doubtful in my abilities to do well in medical school because I took my MCAT three times. This has been on my mind a lot and made me wonder if the admissions committee here had the same notion. I would like to spend time to clarify and hopefully eliminate any doubts the committee may have in my ability to do well in medical school and also be a great clinician. Some may view the fact that I took the MCAT three times as it took me three tries to finally get it right, but I don’t. I believe that it only took one with the right resources.…

Strengthening the student toolbox by Dunlosky describes multiple strategies that students can use to learn certain amounts of information that the students have to know in a class and in turn strategies on how teachers can teach their students. These strategies were as follows for students and teachers being the good; practice testing, disturbed practice, interleaved practice, elaborative interrogation, self-explanation, and the bad; rereading, highlighting, summarization, keyword mnemonic and imagery for text. All of these strategies are and can be used by students and helped or hindered along by their teachers, some more than others. In my high school years I received multiple instructions to not cram study for a test and to space out studying for it in the days leading up to the test.…

So far, I can say that the strategies I learned in chapter have helped become a better note-taker. Now before I take notes I consider my goals and what I want to get out of my notes. I actively listen to what the professor has to say so that I can understand “is being said, making sense of it, and thinking about it in a way that permits it to be recalled accurately” (Feldman 58-59). For a student currently enrolled in college composition, this technique has helped me gather information more effectively for my essays. My essays are now more precise and provide more…
