It is not always a voluntary situation. One reason can include that the job is not properly staffed, making the person automatically assume responsibilities to cover themselves and their co-workers. They feel like it is their responsibility to show some leadership to resolve the problem. In some cases, people in higher positions will put pressure on the people in lower positions because they have more authority. People will do whatever is necessary to make a good impression. Another reason to become a workaholic is because of a new job and they want co-workers to rely on them. This helps them to avoid being considered the weak link, especially in a new environment. Finally, financial stress at home is another reason people become workaholics. Maybe significant others have been laid off or they have acquired too much debt. Whatever the case, people will take on the role of a workaholic as a means of survival. The first positive to being a workaholic is earning more money. A second positive is being able to pay bills more easily and have extra money to have more fun than usual. But what workaholic has time for fun? Another positive is gaining higher positions at the workplace that comes with a bigger paycheck. Higher up people recognize the hard work it takes to get a promotion. Finally, co-workers like workaholics. The co-workers will soon realize they are easy to take advantage and will do anything for them. Even though being a workaholic comes with all of these positive things there are downfalls. Nobody has time as a workaholic and keep his or her family happy. Workaholic 's families suffer as well as other important relationships. Everyone needs sleep, but a workaholic will not get much of that because there are more important things to get done. So sleep often gets shoved to the back of the list. Not getting enough sleep will make a person tired or even sick. Finally, being a workaholic can rob someone of the passion that a person once had for what they did. Someone gets into a certain field of work because they like it, and they have some sort of passion for it. When they become a workaholic they often resent the very same thing that they once loved
