Immigration has always been a part of how our country has become what it is today. The melting pot we live in is all thanks to the different immigrants who came to the United States throughout the course of our country’s history. We have had every ethnicity live here coming from China, Europe, and even African. But one ethnicity that is close to my heart is my heritage of being Italian. I am one half Italian on my dad’s side and it has always brought me pride to be able to call myself Italian.
My Italian heritage goes very far back to my great-great-great grandparents who were my first known relatives to come to the United States during their life in the 1900s. My paternal great-great-great grandfather Giuseppe Sunseri was born in Trabia,

America was known as the land of opportunity and second chances and that drew people here. Everyone wanted to strike it rich and this was something that lots of second born sons loved, because they could now own land and not have to worry about their family’s wealth decreasing. This idea of an open frontier was enticing to many people where you could escape the crowded area you lived in before or get away from economic, or social problems in your home. Everyone, including my relatives, wanted to get away from the harsh lives they were living before and saw America and ultimately California as the perfect place to start anew. In Italian families everyone in the family was expected to help out in the business and they looked out for one another and the community was just an extension of the

I come from a mixed background; my mother is Italian and my father is African-American, and the two cultures that I have experienced by being mixed have shaped me into the person I am today. My Italian grandparents, or as I call them "Nono and Nona," came to America from Italy for a better life. Their determination to make such a life-changing journey to another country has thus been instilled in me and has made me realize that if you take the path you want in life, it will all work out. My African-American grandmother, or as I call her "Nana," was born in West Virginia then moved to Columbus, Ohio, where my father was born. After many years in Ohio and when my father was young, their family moved to Los Angeles, California.…

The number one reason for the Italian immigration to America was the poverty Southern Italy faced. Southern Italy based there life primarily on the farming lifestyle. Yet, key factors came into play that pushed the peasants out of Southern Italy, these factors mostly included Northern Italy. There was pressure of a high population on Italy’s infertile land, this hurt Southern Italy because they could not compete with the industries of Western Europe, and could not produce as much food. Throughout United States history there have been many problems the country has had to face and overcome, from segregation to financial disasters, but one that is very significant in the way the United States is today is immigration. Since the end of the Civil War up until the late 1920’s into 1930, immigrants faced many obstacles, fortunately these obstacles have been triumphed. Around 1848 when California joined the United States, hundreds of thousands of immigrants flooded the United States in hope of finding gold and starting a new, richer life. The population of California grew from 10,000 to 350,000 within a matter of just a few years, most of which were all young and single men.…
