The average first DUI has fines around $500, with a jail sentence of 3 days or going to drinking and driving classes, and losing their license from six months to a year. Any further DUI convictions result in higher and higher fines, restrictions, and punishment. The biggest punishment comes from vehicular manslaughter. This is a felony and will give you prison time, usually between twenty years and life depending on the person’s previous record. Driving drunk and being convicted more than four times in many states changes the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony, which impacts jobs and even includes prison time. These are some very big incentives to not drink and drive. The consequences can shatter a person’s future and be very difficult to …show more content…
The body cannot handle alcohol and the increased rate at which the body must handle incoming information while driving. The chance a person has of injuring someone exponentially increases the more that person drinks. The lives lost not only affect the driver and his record, but the families of someone who has lost a loved one due to a person deciding they are “sober” enough to drive. Many people do not know how gender and weight affect a person’s ability to negate the effects of alcohol on their body. Being convicted of a DUI will hurt a person’s ability to get a job, it is extremely expensive, and the consequences become life altering depending on how many a person has obtained or if someone was hurt because they chose to drive. The consequences are too great for one person to make a decision that has the ability to alter or affect someone else’s life. There are a lot of different options that can be used when someone is drinking. They could call a cab, have a designated driver, they could make sure a friend is watching over them to make sure they do not drive, or they could be at a house party and the owners of the house could take keys away from anyone that plans to drink in their home. There are clear options when a person plans to drink and making these plans ensure they stay safe and are still able to get back to their comfy bed. If these types of precautions were taken, much heartache could be avoided for
