Laertes is a character that is presented in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Laertes is a young college student around Hamlet 's age. His father is Polonius, and has a younger sister named Ophelia. He is overprotective of his sister Ophelia and shows signs to have much love for his family. For instance, in Act 1.3 when Laertes says to Ophelia, “Then if he says he loves you, It fits your wisdom so far to believe it”(24-25), he demonstrates that he really cares about her because he does not want her to do anything that she will regret later on. In 1.3 Polonius and Laertes are talking to Ophelia ,are giving her advice, and Laertes says “Farewell, Ophelia, and remember well What i have said to you.”(83-84), he is reveals who he a very caring person. He wants his things to be good. Hearing that his father was dead in 4.5 he was impatient Laertes says to the king “O thou vile king, Give me my father!”(115-116), he is made as he says this part, and shows more aggression towards the king. He adapts a different mood in each scene. Knowing his sister is going crazy and died must be really hard to believe. Two people he really loved died and in 5.1 he says to the priest “I tell thee, churlish priest, A minist’ ring angel shall my sister be”(255-256), he shows a big impact because he does care for his sister and wants to make sure thing go well before things begin to happen. Laertes fights with Hamlet is a big significance to the story because this whole time they wanted to get revenge on the murderers of their father 's death and they both die in the end. At that moment we knew that Hamlet wants to get revenge on King Claudius for killing his Father, moreover, Laertes is trying to get revenge on Hamlet because he killed his father, Polonius. These two gentlemen are trying to avenge their father 's’ death because they think if they killed they are going to be better. Laertes tells the king in 4.7 that “And so have I a noble father lost……. For her perfection. But my revenge will come.”(25-29), which means the he has lost a father and wants revenge and soon something would happen to the murderer of his father 's death. On the other hand, Hamlet wants to get revenge of his father 's murder as well. Hamlet tells the Ghost “the thoughts of love, May sweep to my revenge”(30-31), meaning he would do anything to kill the murderer that killed his father. Getting revenge was one thing they had in common and the other thing they would have in common would be to have love for Ophelia. Laertes in 5.1 is around the grave with Queen and Hamlet and says, “Deprived thee off the earth awhile, Till I have caught her once more in mine arms.”(262-263), he is trying to show his love to his dead sister now. What he did not get to do when his sister was alive he is trying to do now, and trying to give her the love that he had for her inside and could not express it to his sister.
