During the field trip, which was held Thursday, February 22, I have made a lot of realizations. Throughout the field trip, numerous amounts of knowledge were gained. For example, I learned about the history of downtown Albany, Georgia. This included the renowned Flint River. I also learned how somewhere out there in the universe there could be more existing life. Making these new realizations there was some things that I was not to excited to learn about. For instance, I was well-informed that plastic will most likely be the end of the world.
It was early Thursday morning and it was the day everyone in the 7th grade gifted classes were waiting for. It was our trip downtown to the Flint River Aquarium and the Thornateeska Science Museum. I got

We found our seats and sat down and waited for the movie to begin, which was called Oasis in Space. The movie begins, and the entire planetarium grew dark. We looked up at the dome shaped ceiling, where the movie was begin projected, and watched as the movie begin to play. The movie kind of made me think in a different way. It talked about how earth is the only planet in our solar system able to have life. The movie also was stating that somewhere far out in the universe there could be more life. The credits begin to play, and the movie was over. The planetarium was lit again, and it was time to go on our next station. We got up out of our seats and head back to the front of the museum where we begin the scavenger hunt. We were give a paper that had clouds labeled*********************************. We had to go around the entire museum and find the answers to each question. We went to the section labeled Air and Space first. Here I found out some cool information. I learned that butterflies can emerge from their cocoons in space and in zero gravity. The next station was Meteorology. Meteorology was one of the best stations. It consisted of a camera and weather station. If you were to stand in front of the camera you would appear on the television screen like a meteorologist. Next, we went to natural science, which was the most challenging stations. My group was stuck of the question that stated, “What part of the eye changes in size because of light?’ There were two possible answers, but we just went with our gut and chose iris as the answer. The following station was paleontology which was interesting because it taught me something that I didn’t know. I was informed that the Indigenous Forest formed 10,000 years ago. The next station was hydrology which was extremely informational. The informed me that the Upper Floridan Aquifer is of the very important sources of water in South Georgia. I also learned that

Whether discovering something for the first time, or rediscovering something, it is our attitude towards the process of discovery that is most important, so is our attitude towards the process of discovery really most important? Well, the growth of an individual' is developed by their experiences and response to discovery or rediscovery, which can shape someone’s beliefs and values which is something I learnt from my engagement within texts Go Back To Where You Came From and Distant Lands. Some discoveries may be planned such as the journey experienced by the participants of Ivan O’Mahoney’s documentary Go Back To Where You Came From in 2008. This documentary brings an emotional, transformational, educational and relational experience which…

Discoveries can only occur if one is willing to take a journey, a leap of faith, while maintaining an open mind. Discoveries often involve introspection and learning about people, places, events and relationships that can challenge previously held values and attitudes. Through William Shakespeare’s 1611 play, ‘The Tempest’, and Gweyneth Lewis’ short poem, ‘Peripheral Vision’, readers gain a deep understanding of the concept discovery, and how discoveries, by their very nature, change our ways of thinking and our values. Shakespeare’s, The Tempest, presents several discoveries, which come about through ideas of revenge, love, renewal and usurpation. These thematic concerns all question established power structures and hierarchies between the…

For the remainder of the summer I will continue to attend Schoolcraft College, where I plan to complete two of the remaining courses for the nursing prerequisites requirements. Once classes end, I will begin the fall semester at Madonna University, where I intend to complete the remaining classes needed, in order to be considered into the program. Months into my first semester at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, I had felt a disconnection with the profession I had chosen--doctor. I felt confused and tried to work through it, convincing myself that it was the right choice.…

Goals and Expectations for My Time At Castleton and Beyond Castleton is the perfect environment for me to exercise and apply the ideas expressed in Zakaria’s book, In Defense of a Liberal Education. After reading the assigned book this summer I found that I gained a new understanding of how schools are run, from elementary to higher education. Throughout my time in high school I experienced an ever growing curiosity as I was being exposed to new ideas by both my teachers and my peers, but not being thoroughly taught about these new subjects. Castleton is where I hope to gain the ability to explore these curiosities I’ve acquired more effectively both in and out of the classroom. I was never quite sure what it meant to go to a liberal arts…

During the Georgia Bureau of Investigation field trip, our class was given the opportunity to experience what a day is like for a professional in the crime lab. That included the very ins and outs (no pun intended) of an autopsy. An autopsy is a surgical procedure that consists of a thorough examination of a corpse to determine the cause and manner of death and to evaluate any disease or injury that may be present, usually performed by a pathologist. As a class we learned many things by observing several autopsy procedures.…
