Fried Green Tomatoes is both a film and book written by Fannie Flagg, which takes place in Whistle Stop, Alabama. Whistle Stop is a small community and everyone is involved in each other’s business. It tells the story of four women in two different eras and the trials and tribulations of their life. Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison originally met when Jamison dated Idgie Threadgoodes brother, Buddy Threadgoode. Buddy Threadgoode died after being involved in a train accident, both Idgie Threadgoode and Jamison witnessed his death. Years later, the two girls became best friends, and business partners who had an impact on the entire community (Flagg). There are many different forms of discrimination which include but are not limited to race/color, age, religion, and sex. Discrimination will always be part of the society we live in. Although, discrimination today is a lot harder to get away with then it was in the film Fried Green Tomatoes due to the Federal anti-discrimination laws that apply. The news article, “Fried Green Tomatoes and Hollywood Female-Female Relationships in the South” describes the true meaning of feminism in this film. It discusses how women were treated differently than men. Women were expected to be proper, wear dresses, cook, clean, and obey their husbands no matter what. One example of feminism in this film is when Evelyn Couch, a depressed housewife decides she wants a change. Although her husband, Ed Couch is not happy with the change, Evelyn Couch becomes a very happy and independent woman. This example shows how a woman stepped out of her comfort zone and did something for herself. Another example is with Idgie Threadgoode. Idgie Threadgoode is not much of a lady, but supports the rights of women. She spends her free time in the bar where she drinks, gambles, and swears. She even wears boy’s clothes.
